I always tell my students before a match, “confident, not cocky!”. Both start with the letter “C”, but they have absolutely zero similarities beyond that. Let’s define the word cocky first. Cocky is defined as “conceited or arrogant, especially in a bold or impudent way. In a nutshell, being cocky will only detour you from your goals, put you in a bubble that no one wants to be around and ultimately bring you down as a person. When you are cocky, you put yourself on a pedestal that through your mind, psychologically, no one can ever obtain.
Confident. This is the mindset you want to see yourself be in. Being confident is a positive mindset, encouraging yourself to strive for more and keeping yourself focused while obtaining your goals. Confidence is defined as the feeling or belief that one can rely on oneself while affirming trust in oneself. When you are confident, you don’t let yourself step over others nor do you lose track of your goals. When you are preparing yourself for a big life event, you are less likely to make mistakes when you are confident. Confidence will take you very far in life. Confidence is key!
As you start 2017 off with your goals and ambitions, remember to be confident, not cocky. When you put your eyes on something, you want to make sure that you have a positive look towards it. You must have a positive, all the way to the beginning and end plan that will keep you focused. What is the best way to do this? Be confident! Now let’s turn this around and think about going into the new year with cockiness. You will see your plans start to slip overtime. You will fall behind in your goals, detour from your family and negate any positive criticism people have for you.
In conclusion, one thing you can do every day before you walk out your door or put your vehicle in drive is to remind yourself to be confident, not cocky. This will keep your mind to subconsciously remember to stay positive in a confident way. Trust me, it works!
